The observation tower on Culp’s Hill.
At this moment he crossed the tower platform, stopping just short of the stairs, once again leaning upon his professional defensive training. He waited, still hearing nothing from below. He finally stepped over to the entrance to the stairs, prepared to congratulate the individual upon his physical conditioning for taking the stairs at that rate. His words went unspoken: he was looking at an empty landing and beyond it, down an empty staircase.
He had absolutely no doubt of what he had heard. He hurried down the staircase to confirm that there was no one else in the vicinity. He stood at the tower’s base for a few minutes. Then, a smile began to spread across his face as he finally began to realize what had just happened. Out loud, to no one except himself and whatever invisible entity had just entered this world and left it noiselessly, he said, “That was good, really good….”
He got in his vehicle and headed out the Baltimore Pike, but he could not help himself. He turned in on the road that circles Culp’s Hill and drove the route again to see if he could spot anyone walking away from that tower. The roads, at 8:30 p.m. were deserted.
He revisited the tower the next morning before he left Gettysburg. Witnessing a young couple ascend and then descend the same tower, he realized that one makes considerably more noise coming down the steel steps than going up. He knew then that, if whatever it was that had visited him on the tower the day before had descended by conventional means, he certainly would have heard it.
Analyzing his experience, he discounted the power of suggestion as the cause. Anything paranormal he would have expected to see, but “the idea that I might hear footsteps where there apparently were none had simply never occurred to me!” Informing him that a Civil War soldier’s “Brogan” footwear had leather soles would not have helped explain his experience.
His confusion concerning the event may have been assuaged, however, if he had seen a letter I have in my files.
A man, who is an engineer and his brother-in-law were visiting Gettysburg at the beginning of October 1997. It was a wonderfully warm day, which is usually a surprise to many people who do not realize how warm it stays in Gettysburg, often all the way into November.
They parked their car in the lot at the base of the Culp’s Hill tower and climbed the stairs to the top platform. Theirs was the only car in the lot and he was a little surprised that they were the only ones there.
His brother-in-law had moved to the southeast corner of the square observation platform and the writer of the letter had moved to the northwest corner and was standing a little to the right of it at the safety wall. All of a sudden a wraith-like figure swept past him to his left. He turned to see an attractive young woman standing at the west rail.
